Loanees Must Stay

One of the most important keys for MLSE to build trust with fans for next season is to either buy outright, or extend the loans of Richard Eckersley and Joao Plata. I would prefer for Toronto to make a transfer bid for both players as then they would be able to develop at least for a little while with Toronto and if interest from Europe does come at least TFC can benefit. Ecks would solidify the wings as Morgan isn't going anywhere soon either; meaning that the only position in defense TFC would need to concentrate on would be Centre Back and perhaps if Adrian Cann comes back healthy we would only need one solid CB to shore up our defenses. With Plata as a solid option for LW most of our attack would be solid as Plata as LW, Koevs as ST and Johnson as RW will let us enjoy a good attack. If Plata and Ecks return it would go along way for TFC to make the playoffs next year with some more depth obtained in the offseason.

Question?? I'm under the impression that De Guzman has just finished the last year in his contract; if true should TFC sign him back as a DP. If say he signs for something crazy like less than DP value due to hometown discount should we do it immediately and what are the chances of that happening at all??

By the Way, I'm new be gentle; HAHA; Go TFC

very much agree

they’re both big parts of the team, and both very popular with the fans. At the townhall meeting I went to, signing eckersley was brought up a few different times as something that fans wanted.

As for De Guzman. I think he has one year left, but there was a lot of talk that we’d be able to buy him out if we didn’t want him. Whether that’s true or not I don’t know, but I’d like to see him back.

If we could get him at a lower rate (which I very much doubt he’d offer to do, but who knows) then definitely snap him up.

keeping the same rate and still having him take up a DP spot makes it much more of a judgement call. I guess it depends on who they might be able to get in as a replacement DP. A top class CB and I’b be fine with him walking. Other than that, probably not, he seems to be playing well and seems a lot more effective and interested since frings and koevermans came along.

Anyway, welcome, and thanks for posting.

Julian has one year guaranteed left on his contract and it would cost the club more to try and buy him out. Better off letting him see out his contract and hopefully then resign him to a lower number where he is not a DP and the club is free to use that slot and the cap space for further improvements.

On the loan players: Plata is all but signed because he is on loan here but not actually owned by a club now, he is owned by an individual corporation so it is just hammering out the details basically. Ecks is a bit more work to be done still though and it will come down to Burnley doing the smart thing and letting him transfer. Club is clearly working on both already so I think we can expect news anytime between now and the end of December.

Would Burnley have to wait for the transfer window before making a deal?

If they're determined to get something for him

then i presume so yes. If they don’t really care and are maybe just happy to get his wages off the books and move on, then presumably they can just release him at any time. Not sure if they’d do that though.

I don’t see them giving him up for nothing if they can see another club has interest in him…even if that club is TFC

probably not

after a year in the epl, they’re probably dsoind alright for cash still, so probably not desperate to shed contracts, but in this day and age, getting a few hundred thousand pounds a year off the wage bill can be considered ‘getting something’ would they want to risk being stuck paying him if he’s not part of their plans. I imagine they were still paying a portion of his salary this year.

wierd how money has changed how these deals work.

true

if he’s that much of a burden to them that shedding his salary is their primary goal then everybody wins with his release and subsequent signing with TFC

Even if he is released he can’t officially be signed by TFC until January unless this gets done really fast. There is a free transfer window which is about to close and won’t be open again until January when both windows are again open. That said they can have the deal all worked out to bring him in permanently if they want at any point and since the team will not recovene until after the window opens again its all really a non-factor.

The issue is that for TFC to sign either Ecks or Plata they are going to need to accept a pay cut. By all accounts Eckersley is making at least 300,000 pounds a year at Burnley and as a United academy product I think he can find another club willing to sign him to something close to that. Toronto on the other hand are going to have to hope he enjoyed his time here so much that he will take something more like 150,000 dollars otherwise the cap hit just does not work.

Plata might take a low deal from TFC for a season or two but he is almost certain to move for more money down the road even if the club can sign him.

The one thing that might help TFC here is that Garber mentioned giving extra cap room for CCL teams so that might give the Reds a bit more wiggle room which would be great. In a league with a cap the 3 DP’s takes up a lot of room and you have to get deals on players

If they removed the DP’s from the cap completely that would help. And yes I think that the CCL teams have a case for having a larger cap, because demands are that much higher.

i think Ecks would rather play and make 150k than languish with Burnley and make 300k…but i could be wrong. And Plata would likely be in Europe already if his size weren’t considered an issue. But he level of play won’t keep him here for long.

Whatever their long term pictures are I feel they’ll both be wearing TFC colours in March

I hope so as well even if it is just extending their loans for another year to keep them here that much longer.

If we’re waiting on players from the youth system to develop…yes bridging that gap would be for the best. A level of consistency has to be achieved on the pitch and hopefully the club can be successful as it molds itself to whatever system Winter implements.

Speaking of developing players, losing Keven Aleman was a big loss for TFC. I really don’t see how the club could let an up and comer get away like that. And now he won’t even be repping Canada? Good grief
