Eckersley Free To Leave Burnley
Kurt Larson, of Sun Media, reported today that Richard Eckersley has now been released from his contract at Burnley and "is free to leave". That is the best possible news from a Toronto FC perspective because it means that if the defender is willing to accept the clubs best offer there is now no need for a transfer fee.
It has now been confirmed on the clubs website that the defender has had the remainder of his contract cancelled by mutual consent. There were 18 months remaining on the deal between the player and the club.
The defenders release from his club will go down as being by mutual consent as it is in the best interest of both parties. For Burnley they are now free of a fairly large contract and for Eckersley he can now finally find a long term home with a club rather than going on loan after loan.
Reports also came out today that Eckersley was seen at Carrington, his former club Manchester United's training facility, for a checkup which could be the sort of medical that any player has to go through before making a transfer.
We have known for a long time that Toronto's best offer was in the hands of the player so lets just hope that he was willing to accept and his release was the only obstacle left stopping him from re-signing.
This also fits with what John Molinaro found out the other day about certain parties in the transfer dragging their feet. Could very well have been Burnley that were being slow to release the player and allow him to sign on with Toronto.

so, does that take the 99% to 99.9%? hope he doesn’t end up costing too much, but good to see things slowly moving a bit more towards getting players on board.

Could move to to 100% based on all the reports that I have heard regarding him being at Carrington, already have the offer from TFC a long time back, and now being released. Think all that is left to do is sign on the dotted line and announce it as done

Oh for sure, could be totally curved balled and he signs elsewhere. Until it is a done deal, well it is not a done deal

exactly. we don’t really know where the mindset is of his camp, or if there are other teams interested or if he’s interested in other teams. we just have to sit back and wait

Will say that based on comments from him and the club anything but him signing for TFC would be a massive curveball. Have not heard a single report of him being linked to another club

Indeed. But after hearing stories such as the blue Jays winning the Yu Darvish sweepstakes, I want this thing official. I believe 99.9% yes. But it’s not certain til it’s certain

Hard to compare to Darvish when neither club nor play said anything about that and it was basically a silent auction to see who submitted the highest big. But yes, lets wait until tomorrow and then be happy if it is announced as a done deal

Yea I blame TSN for the Darvish thing.

All about the ratings. Easy to say a team is bidding on a player when no way you can really ever be proven wrong!

Has to be under the DP mark of just over 300K but other than that we really can do more then guess at this stage. I figure he will take a pay cut from his previous wage at Burnley and end up in the area around 200k. Will be a fairly steep hit to the cap so he will have to be one of our best players again to make sure it is good value.

I like eckersley and all that, but I hope it’s not 200,000. unless he improves over last year that’s too much. I’d say 100-150,000 would be as far as I’d want to go.

That would be a big pay cut for him but a lot better for TFC and their limited cap space. Won’t know until we get union figures again though

well based on his previous salaries I’d say he’s already made a(few?) million. the real question is: how much does he actually value money? Is his objective to make as much money as possible, or is it to make an honest living while doing something he loves? In earlier interviews he’s stated that he doesn’t care much about the money as long as he’s playing games, but that’s coming from a guy making (500g?) a year. I wonder how true that statement becomes when faced with the prospect of not having that kind of cash flowing in. I think any sensible person would be happy to live off of 100g a year for playing a game that they love.
I also think that the fact that he tore up his old contract is evidence that he doesn’t care about the money, but until I see: 1. the official announcement that he’s signed, and 2. the union figures that state that he took a pay cut, I’ll remain skeptical. The generally greedy nature of footballers has taught me to be skeptical about players saying they don’t care about money
