Not Avila's best look. And hey, it's Conor Casey, he's available as well. Not Terry, he's safe. - Abelimages
The drafts just keep on coming in MLS. This week and next it's the Re-entry Process, involving 2 drafts! Today we learnt who'll be available from all the teams. There were no real surprises for Toronto FC, who added 3 names to the previously announced cuts.
The Re-Entry Process (all caps copied faithfully from mlssoccer.com), a draft so good they actually do it twice. First up, this Friday at 3pm, there's what MLS is awkwardly calling the Stage One draft of the Re-Entry Process (again all caps faithfully copied etc etc). where one man's overpaid trash is another man's priced just right treasure.
Anyone picked in the Stage One draft generally has to be paid full price. From MLSSoccer.com:
Clubs must exercise the option for, or extend a Bona Fide Offer to, all players selected in Stage 1. Players that were out of contract may either accept or reject the Bona Fide Offer. Should a player reject the offer, the drafting club will hold the right of first refusal for that player in MLS. Players with option years left on their contract will automatically be added to the drafting club's roster.
Clear as mud. The Stage Two draft, next Friday is where most of the action will happen as clubs are free to renegotiate with any of their picks, with no obligation to keep them if a deal can't be reached. Anyone who passes through both Stages of the Process is then free to go back to their original club at a lower rate if they and their club want. In both Stages, TFC will get the dubious honour of picking first due to this season's suckfest, so if there's anyone they really want, there's no deals to be made or anxious waiting to be done. It's a shop, they can go out and take what they want.
The full list of 67 available players is at the bottom of the page, there's some interesting names for sure, but that's an article for another day. As for TFC, well added to Adrian Cann and Ty Harden, announced a while back along with those eligible for the earlier Waiver Draft (it's MLS, don't ask me to explain, not sure I can), were 3 more of 2012's underacheivers, Eric Avila, Jeremy Hall and Andrew Wiedeman.
Avila is no surprise as he and Mariner obviously haven't got along, and it seems like Mariner's last slap will be the slap right out of the club.
Jeremy Hall? Well his playing time certainly suggested Mariner rated him, or at least trusted him, and given he can cover both full back positions and play in midfield, all to a certain level of mediocrity, he definitely has some value. Not $149,000 worth of value though, so this is a good decision in a cap based world.
Andrew Wiedeman? Well, he now of course officially becomes 'the best Re-Entry draftee of the modern era'. He's a shining example of the unintended consequences of the Generation Adidas programme for those that don't develop as may have been expected. With a wage that's way over what he'd be making without Adidas' help, once that status runs out, well this is the natural place for this type of player.
All 3 of them could end up being taken in Stage Two, they all offer certain things that can be useful at the right price. I imagine it's the last we'll see of them in Toronto Red, though I could see Hall or Wiedeman being given another shot by management at the right price.
Anyway, thanks to all 3 for their efforts, here's the full list of players released. Check out Colorado, they're really trying to get that 'old TFC players' stench out.
