Last week we reported that Canadian International Tosaint Ricketts was on trial with 2.Bundesliga club Dynamo Dresden. During that trial the Edmonton native scored 4 goals in 3 appearances and it was reported that he impressed the coach in both training and exhibitions.
He seems set to sign for the club on the back of that impressive trial and was even included in the team photo taken this week. The reports in Germany suggest that both parties are very interested in getting a deal in place but they still have some details left to finalize before Ricketts can be officially signed.
If Dresden can get a deal sorted out for Ricketts in the coming days it would enable the Canadian forward to take part in preseason with them including a pair of friendlies against English clubs. Dresden is set to play Manchester City (July 17) and West Ham United (July 27) to tune up for the upcoming 2.Bundesliga season. Both matches would certainly be among the career highlights for Ricketts even if a club like City is unlikely to be using much of their first team for such a match.
The best part of this potential move is that it gives Ricketts the chance for more stability in his career than he had in recent seasons. His time with Politehnica Timişoara began well but after the club was relegated from Romania's top flight things seemed to head down hill and eventually ended in Ricketts leaving the club citing a lack of payment. That sort of thing will hopefully not be an issue in Germany as Dresden is a well established club and is one of the more popular sides in the former East Germany.
Having Ricketts at a stable club and playing regular minutes will be key for the Canadian national team as they head towards crucial World Cup qualifying matches in the fall. Ricketts will be one of the players counted on to contribute to the attack and hopefully provide some consistent scoring on the international stage.
