Disappointment (A Mini-Musical)

What? You mean this isn't already on Broadway?!

(The soul-crushing disappointment. It's been going on and on and on and on. There's been multitudes of ways for us to express it, but nary has it been done via the art of the dramatic play. We here at Waking the Red have presented a few artistic ways...but now, we've got a new way.

WTR Experiemental Theatre is proud to present our latest dramatical offering...a mini-musical, featuring the music of 70s Canadian band, Edward Bear...)

DISAPPOINTMENT
A five-song mini-musical

(We open in the south stands of BMO Field, after the 3-1 Santos Laguna win. Two solitary figures remain in the still lit stadium. Duncan sits looking forlorn near the edge of the field, while Kristin looks over the railing, out towards the bright lights of the CNE)

Duncan: It's too long, just far too long...

Kristin: ...why does this team always do this to me?

Duncan: Why is it that we're stuck in this place, week in and week out, only to be disappointed over and over?

Kristin: That's just no way to treat a lady...

Duncan: Is it a time for a break-up?

(Begin "The Last Song/Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady" mashup)

Duncan:

Did you know I go to sleep, and leave the lights on,
Wishing you'd know, how much my heart hurts, it keeps me awake,
And six years has gone by, and still my light's on
This is hard for me to say, but much more I can't take...

It's the last song I'll ever write for you,
It's the last time that I'll tell you just how much I really care
This is the last song I'll ever sing for you,
You'll come looking for the light and fans just won't be there
But I still love you, oh yes I do...yes I do...

Kristin:

Dichio stole into my heart and set it afire,
The magic made my body burn with sweet desire.
The way that passion consumed me, I couldn't resist you,
My love was yours the moment that I kissed you.
You promised me our love would last forever,
Now there's just confusion, heartache and confusion...

That ain't no way to treat your fans, That ain't no way to treat your fans...
That ain't no way to treat your fans, baby.

Duncan:

Us in your stands, should be a priceless treasure
But all you've done was squander with pleasure...
I tried so hard to be the fan who'd stay true,
But all you've done is treat us like ATMs,
If you don't love us then why don't you leave us?
Cause now it's like my dreams are tearin' at the seams...

Kristin:

It's the last song I'll ever write for you,
It's the last time that I'll tell you just how much I really care
This is the last song I'll ever sing for you,
You'll come looking for the light and it won't be there
But I still love you, oh yes I do...yes I do...

Duncan:

It's the last song I'll ever write for you,
It's the last time that I'll tell you just how much I really care

Kristin:

That ain't no way to treat your fans, That ain't no way to treat your fans...
That ain't no way to treat your fans, baby.

Duncan/Kristin:

This is the last song I'll ever sing for you,
You'll come looking for the light and it won't be there
But I still love you, oh yes I do...yes I do...

(End music, both sitting next to each other.)

Duncan: When...when will this end?

Kristin: When will this disappointment and heartbreak end?

Duncan/Kristin: But can we remove ourselves from this pain?

(Both look at each other, then forlornly onto the empty pitch, as the lights fade away. )

(Far away from BMO Field, in a nondesript home in suburban Calgary -- John turns off the TV in the living room. He sighs heavily, and finishing typing on a laptop.)

John: Oh, to only have the better days...better things to write.

(He pauses.)

John: If there were any. Maybe if I closed my eyes?

(Begin "Close Your Eyes")

John:

I dreamed that Glory finally came last night, I asked her where she'd been
She said, "I've been around the world and, I almost didn't come.
She said. "I hope you didn't wait too long, I have no sense of time.
I see you've written that last song, and I realized it's mine.
But think of when the times were bad, and sing that good old song...

Close your eyes, I'm never leaving you.

You run for miles you know I'll still find you
Cause it's all the same, change your lovers, change your name
If you need a friend, close your eyes, I'm back again."

(Musical bridge...)

John: All the good times, why can't it be more permanent? Haven't we suffered enough?

(End musical bridge...)

She really came back home last night, seemed as if she'd changed

Said that she's off to Vancouver, and asked me to follow
But you know it didn't take too long, 'til she lost her way
And all the reason in the world could see, she couldn't stay
As I helped her pack her things, it didn't hurt to say...

"Close your eyes, I'm right beside you

Run for miles you know I'll still need you.
Cause it's all the same, change your lovers, change your name
If I need you, I close my eyes, and you're here again.

Cause it's all the same, change your lovers, change your name

If I need you, I close my eyes, and you're here again."

(End music, John reopens his eyes.)

John: Nope...didn't work.

(John sighs, and closes the laptop.)

* * *

(Back east, Dave and James are both at an establishment near the stadium, drowning their sorrows.)

Dave: Think we could run away from this?

James: Like to Mexico?

Dave: Well, not that extreme...don't think that'd work.

James: Maybe we can just block it out?

Dave: Yeah, that sounds about right.

James: Just imagine...the bliss it would be...

(Begin "You, Me and Mexico".)

James:

It's been a long time since I've even thought of you,
It's been a long time since I realized that you weren't there,

Dave:

It's been a long time since I looked at what I'm doing,
It's been a long time since I realized I don't really care,

James/Dave:

Cause I'm thinking of you down in Mexico, feeling free as the air,
Here I am stuck in the city, still going nowhere.

Dave:

It scares me sometimes when I see how I'm held here,
It scares me sometimes when I see just how you got away,

James:

It seems to work fine leaving all of the trouble,
It seems to work fine and I really don't know why I stay,

Dave/James:

Cause I'm thinking of you down in Mexico, feeling free as the air,
Here I am stuck in the city, still going nowhere...

(Musical bridge...)

Dave: I think it's working!

James: It's incredible! I'm feeling free as their air!

(Michael enters the scene, and looks at Dave and James with a weird look, which stops the two in their tracks...the music suddenly stops as well.)

Michael: Do I even want to know what's going on?

James: Um...

Dave: We're just trying to forget.

Michael: That still won't remove the masquerade...

(Begin "Masquerade")

Michael:

Paint their faces to run around, dancin' in silky satin gowns.
Turn my full length mirror down, oh you think you're safe and sound.
But you know what I found?
Base six season on a lie, which they then proceed to hide.
Comes a time I can't decide, but it's time to open up our eyes,
To think it's time that you tried to see...

The masquerade, and that's an awful game to play.
It's just a masquerade, making us the queen of diamonds honey,
Or the ace of spades...

Paint ours face and run around, dancin' in silky satin gowns.
Turnin' our full length mirrors down, oh we think we're safe and sound.
I thought you'd know I'd found...

It's just a masquerade, and that's an awful game to play.
It's just a masquerade, making you the queen of diamonds honey,
On the ace of spades..

It's just a masquerade...

James/David:

It's just a masquerade...

(The music ends; and all three are looking glummer than ever.)

Dave: Well, THAT didn't work.

James: To look at the truth, or try to ignore it?

Michael: That's the million dollar question...

(All three sigh, and take a drink.)

* * *

(Everyone is now together on the same empty stage.)

Duncan: So now we play out the season...that's all there is, isn't it?

Kristin: We could take up hockey.

Michael: Yeah, like that's going to help...

James: There's always the EPL.

John: Thast's still not going to help...oh lord, why us?

(Begin "Freedom for the Stallion")

Duncan/Kristin/John:

Freedom for the stallion, freedom for the mare and colt.

James/Dave/Michael:

Freedom for the baby child, who has not grown old...

(Music goes on...but then no one is singing.)

Dave: Does anyone remember the rest of this?

(Everyone looks at John)

John: What's everyone looking at me for?

Michael: You're the one who wrote this mini-musical.

Kristin: And what the hell does stallions have to do with anything?

John: Um...

(Everyone glares)

John: Ah, we're miserable...let's just sing about it!

(Silence...)

Duncan: (Shrugs) Might as well...

(Begin "We're Here For A Good Time")

Duncan:

A very good friend of mine, told me something the other day...

John:

I'd like to pass it on to you, 'cause I believe what he said to be true...

Kristin/Dave/Michael:

He said, we're not having a good time...for a long time!

Duncan/John/James:

...for a long time!

Kristin/James/Dave:

Haven't had a good time, the sun hasn't shine any day!

Dave/James:

And the sun ain't shinin, in this rainy city,
And the sun ain't shinin, ooh it's such a pity?

Michael:

That every year we've had our share of tears, every day it's been just a lotta rain...

Duncan/John/James:

He said, we're not having a good time...for a long time!

Kristin/Dave/Michael:

...for a long time!

Duncan/James:

Haven't had a good time, the sun hasn't shined any day!

Michael/Kristin:

And the sun ain't shinin, in this rainy city,
And the sun ain't shinin, ooh it's such a pity?

Dave/James

He said, we're not having a good time...for a long time!

John:

Haven't had a good time, the sun hasn't shined any day...

Kristin/Michael

He said, we're not having a good time...for a long time!

Duncan:

Haven't had a good time, the sun hasn't shined any day...

(The music ends, as Duncan hits the last note.)

Dave: It's still not helping, though...

Duncan: Yeah, I think I'd rather have some Scotch.

Michael: Oh well...at least we tried singing it out.

John: Maybe next year, indeed...

(Everyone looks at Dave, shrugs, and the curtains drop as they all walk off the stage.)
