Toronto FC sent their U15 and U17 sides to Seattle this week to take part in the annual Generation Adidas Cup competition. Both sides have been doing quite well and took place in semi-final matches Tuesday evening.
The U15 side made it to the semi's after winning their group ahead of youth sides from San Jose Earthquakes, FC Dallas and Seattle Sounders. They took 7 points from the group stages with their only blemish being a lost to Dallas on penalties in the opening game of the tournament following a 1-1 draw. They improved to claim a 3-0 win over Seattle and a 2-1 win over San Jose.
By winning their group the U15's earned a date with the LA Galaxy who they managed to dispatch in the semifinal thanks to a 1-0 win. The younger side has now only conceded 2 goals in their four matches and are looking at a date in Thursday's final against Chivas USA.
At the U17 level the story has been quite similar. The team topped their four team group with 7 points having recovered from a disappointing PK loss in the opening match. They tied LA 1-1 but with all games needing a winner were forced to go to PKs and ended up on the short end of the result. After that it was a 2-1 win over FC Dallas that set up a must win game against DC United to wrap up the group stage. The Reds got a resounding 4-1 win thanks to goals from Jordan Hamilton, Mark Wadid, and a brace from Daniel Jodah. The win earned them a date with the Columbus Crew in the semifinals.
In the Crew the U17 team had a very familiar opponent and were looking at the game as a good chance to advance to the finals over a fierce rival. The game ended in a 1-1 draw sending it straight to penalties but unlike in the LA match this time the U17's came out on top. The win means that Toronto is looking at a match against the Philadelphia Union on Thursday for the tournament championship.
It is nice to see both academy sides performing so well against competition from other MLS clubs. With both teams in action on Thursday in finals we will try to keep you up to date on scores.
