The Canadian Women's National team is gearing up for a pair of demanding friendlies next month. The team will head to Europe to play France on April 4th and then England on April 7th before most of the players get busy playing for their new NWSL clubs.
Canada will be in for a tough task against both sides as England and France are among the best teams in the World right now. Canada will be familiar with both squads from recent meetings including a 1-0 defeat to England in the Cyprus Cup final earlier in March. The match against France will be the first meeting between the two squads since the bronze medal match at London 2012.
With Herdman continuing to work to retool his squad to ensure they are ready to compete for the World Cup in 2015 it is no surprise that he has again worked a number of younger players into the team along with the veteran core that you would expect to see still representing Canada when the World Cup kicks off in Edmonton.
Ashley Lawrence and Kadeisha Buchanan are once again part of the squad following their impressive performances at the Cyprus Cup. They are joined by Tiffany Cameron, Adriana Leon, and Jodi-Ann Robinson along with all of the usual veterans in what has to be considered a very strong squad.
The attack is fairly young with Cameron,Leon, and Robinson joining Christine Sinclair but that is one area of the team that Herdman has the most work to do in his overhaul. The team has been looking for increased secondary scoring for years now so finding one or two young attackers that can step up and contribute combined with increasing Fligino's confidence could be just the recipe for success that Canada is looking for.
There are 17 players on the roster for these friendlies that were also on the Cyprus Cup and with 14 players from the Olympic roster included it is a strong group resenting Canada.
The good news is that both of these matches will be streamed by sportsnet which is a nice change after getting only highlights from the Cyprus Cup.
