Massey: "Women's Ballon D'Or is a Joke"

There's very little that Ben Massey and I see eye-to-eye on, but there are rare exceptions, and this piece he put together for Maple Leaf Forever is one of those. To sum up, Massey argues that by allowing voters who have less than a passing interest in women's football to vote for the best players of the world, it distorts what is reality. He's always been known for liberal use of statistics, and all of them lead to one conclusion: whoever was voting, did it all wrong. Read the story at the link above. As if FIFA doesn't grind enough people's gears already...

Christina Pedersen Gets an F(-Bomb)

For years, Canadian comedy troupe the Royal Canadian Air Farce have been firing chicken cannons and F-Bombing worthy targets for scorn on their annual New Years' Eve TV special. Past targets have included former President George W. Bush (chosen as top target many times during his Presidency), and NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. This year, as chosen by their viewers, they've included a special target -- skip ahead to about 41 minutes in, and you will see. She didn't quite beat out a haggle of corrupt mayors, but it's damn close. Our national healing is officially complete -- thank you, Air Farce! (N.B. -- The video is Canada only...oops!)

London 2012 Suffers First Epic Fail; Inflames International Tensions While At It

Chalk this one under "LOLWTFBBQ". Just after the Canada-Japan game ended in Coventry, North Korea and Colombia was set to kick off in Glasgow -- only problem is, the flag used to introduce the North Koreans...is the one for the South. Given how tense things are politically in the peninsula, that was one hell of an epic fail. Not one to be good sports, the Lady Chollima pouted for over an hour in protest of this flap. The London organizers have apologized to the North Koreans about this -- but now somehow the topic at the main SB Nation site has become: why on earth is a team banned from the 2015 Women's World Cup for positive drug tests, allowed here? Chip in your two cents, at the link above. Or here.

WTR Live! Olympic Edition: This Saturday!

The Olympic women's football tournament is about to kick off, and we here at Waking the Red are excited for Canada -- sure, they've got Japan and Sweden, but what about South Africa? So that's why we will be hosting a very special Olympic Edition of WTR Live on Saturday morning for the South Africa match, starting at 9:30AM ET (7:30am MT), regardless if the game will be fully live on CTV or not. Also, we will be giving away one of two Christine Sinclair jerseys (courtesy of our friends at Umbro) during the match -- so if that isn't enough incentive to get up early to watch the game and chat with us, then I don't know what is! Email reminders for the event can be set at the link above...trust me, this is one clash you DON'T want to miss!
