A stadium for Calgary?

There's a whole stadium in Calgary, sitting relatively disused. If the baseballers won't use it, why not soccer? WTR's western correspondent goes there.

Equality isn't new in the world, but it's something that's only starting to come to the forefront in sport, especially soccer. Waking the Red has a Q&A with Outsports founder Cyd Ziegler to talk more about that.

WTR Live! Olympic Edition: This Saturday!

The Olympic women's football tournament is about to kick off, and we here at Waking the Red are excited for Canada -- sure, they've got Japan and Sweden, but what about South Africa? So that's why we will be hosting a very special Olympic Edition of WTR Live on Saturday morning for the South Africa match, starting at 9:30AM ET (7:30am MT), regardless if the game will be fully live on CTV or not. Also, we will be giving away one of two Christine Sinclair jerseys (courtesy of our friends at Umbro) during the match -- so if that isn't enough incentive to get up early to watch the game and chat with us, then I don't know what is! Email reminders for the event can be set at the link above...trust me, this is one clash you DON'T want to miss!

Game Thread: Montreal Impact vs Toronto FC (V Cup SF, 1st Leg)

Waking The Red's CoverIt Live commentary is back for another round, and just in time, too...it's the first game of the Canadian Championship semi-final series between TFC and the Montreal Impact. Coverage will begin at 7pm EST, with John Leung in the commentators' chair. Other writer will be on hand to provide additional commentary, and all are encouraged to join in on the debate! (No sign-in is necessary.)

David Testo on Canada AM (1/16/2012)

I know it's not completely related to Toronto FC, but I feel this is an issue that will be with us for a good long while. It's good to see David Testo taking the lead in helping to combat homophobia in sports -- now that he is fully out, it is a grand sight to see him helping in this method. Keep fighting the good fight, David -- myself and the team here at Waking the Red are with you. (P.S. The interview intro with Marci Ien starts at 6:00 in, if you want to cut all the outdated news out.)
