Lee Nguyen is a Texas born midfielder of Asian descent. He has long flirted with the possibility of coming to play in the MLS but now it seems he will be entering the league through a weighted lottery. Nguyen has been a part of the USA system and have made 3 starts for the National team included being brought along to play in the 2007 Copa America. He is a talented player who is capable of playing through out the midfield as well as possesing the skills to chip in on the score sheet.

Nguyen announced tonight that he will be coming to MLS via twitter:

Yep, you can spread the word. This upcoming season, I will be taking my talents to the MLS!!
The 25 year old player was reported to be making around 180k per year when he was playing in Vietnam so if he were to remain on a similar salary then a number of MLS teams would certainly be very interested in signing him. Having been born and raised in the states he would count as a domestic player, has many good years in front of him, and is borderline being good enough for the US national team.

From a TFC perspective he may not be a move that makes all that much sense with the club already working so hard to bring back Joao Plata and having Ryan Johnson, Eric Avila, and Nick Soolsma already on the books. Another talented wide player would be great for Toronto FC but chances are he would not fit under the cap for them.

This does give me a chance to explain how a weighted lottery works in the MLS. In some cases a player will sign on with the league rather then a specific club this is often the case when say a generation adidas player is added after the draft or a player comes to the league but can not be assigned to a club through the draft. It is not often the case that a player like Nguyen goes through a weighted lottery but sometimes the league wants to bring in a player so they work it out that the player signs with the league and is dispersed this way.

The lottery takes place by giving all of the teams in the league the chance to enter if they are interested in the player and then their odds of winning are weighted based on their performance in the past 30 matches, including playoffs. So for this lottery teams like Vancouver, Toronto, and New England will have the best odds of winning the players rights should they enter while the Galaxy will have the very worst odds.

Early speculation is that almost all teams will enter the lottery as long as his price is right. It is clear that he is a quality player and will certainly attract a fair bit of attention. Just not sure if he fits TFC's plans or their current cap space.
