Red Shots. June 7. Canada v USA pre-game edition

After another lopsided win, this time Jamaica beating up the Shalrie Joseph abandoned Grenada 4-0, we finally got a close game last night.  Guatemala and Honduras tying 0-0.  This game had everything you'd expect form two Central American teams, terrible refereeing, and plenty of play acting and time wasting.  Despite all that, it was a decent game, especially as 9 man Guatemala managed to hang on and get the 0-0 draw.

Today of course is all about Canada v USA.  I'll have a brief preview and game thread up later, but until then, here's a bunch of links for your reading pleasure.

I'll start at the Score's footy blog and Footy Final where James Sharman & Kristian Jack host a special vodcast from Ford Field.

Next up is Red Nation Online: The Boot Room: Canada's Gold Cup Preview, a tactical review of recent Canada games to try and predict a formation.

Then we have Here we call it Soccer: Gold Cup Preview: The 1812 Derby.  A really good, thorough preview of the game and Canada's Gold Cup as a whole from the newish blog 'Here we call it Soccer'.

Here's a Canadian Soccer News preview Hart: Canada to play USA aggressively.

Canada is not going to sit back and let the Yanks take the game to them according to head coach Stephen Hart. “I don’t think right now it’s a situation where we bunker down and play a counter attack -- that’s not our game we don’t have that type of mentality anymore,” he said prior to training today.

A lot more articles and plenty of player interviews after the jump

Milan Borjan is proving to be an irresistible story, and rightly so.

Borjan fully committed
that's from Red Nation Online, and this next one is a Canadian Press article that will be in a few places, but as they're showing the game, I'll link it form Sportsnet.

Goalkeeper Borjan gives back to Canada -
"This is the way I can return it to them and say 'thank-you,' because I don't have any other way to return it than by playing for Canada and saying this is my home right now."

John Molinaro's preview for Canada will be out for revenge when it takes on the United States in Detroit on Tuesday night in the opening match for both nations at the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

De Guzman set to miss USA match At the Score, Kristian Jack reports that Julian de Guzman probably won't be starting against the US. Dunfield, Hutchinson, De Rosario, Simpson, Johnson and Gerba were all playing on what looked to be the first team at the bit of training that was open to the press.

RNO interview series: Gold Cup Special, Will Johnson.  Red nation catches up with Will Johnson discussing Canada and the Gold Cup as well as his Concacaf champs league with RSL.

Grass over turf adds challenge for Canada.  The pitch at Ford Field isn't the greatest apparently, It's a bit dead, the ball dies very quickly and there's some gaps in it," said Canadian coach Stephen Hart. "Hopefully they get that repaired. But we've had experience on these types of fields before, it's going to rip up, it's going to pull up, there's going to be slipping and sliding. Hopefully they'll slip and slide and not us."

Canada faces injuries ahead of Gold Cup.  There's unconfirmed injuries to deal with, Julian de Guzman seems unlikely to play, and David Edgar has been called up to replace Dejan Jakovic.
