So where was Paul Mariner over the weekend? The Scottish Sun reports that he was in Scotland watching Motherwell take on Aberdeen. His presence at the game was confirmed by the club, and apparently "There's nothing more to it than that."
They were obviously never going to come out and say who they were interested in, so let the speculation begin. The Sun goes with Aberdeen's New Zealand international Rory Fallon or Kari Arnason as possibilities (though it goes on to dismiss Arnison), given their history of playing with Mariner when he was at Plymouth Argyle, which Richard Eckersley can confirm is a useful fact to have on your resume.
Another option they suggest is Motherwell's soon to be out of contract defender Tim Clancy, which might make more sense given TFC's need for a defender, and given the fact Fallon is currently in the first year of a 2 year contract, so may need a transfer fee to get him away from Aberdeen.
It's all speculation right now, maybe there was no ulterior motive for Mariner to be at the game, thought it does seem a "long way for nothing" as the chant goes, but it's definitely something to keep in mind.
