Toronto FC Depth Chart

Nick Soolsma and Ashtone Morgan are two key parts of Toronto FC's goal to have two quality players at each position. Problem is there is only one Ashtone Morgan to play left back.

Our look at Toronto FC's squad depth has gone from keepers and defenders, to midfielders, to forwards and now it wraps up with a look at the depth of the team as a whole. The question that we will consider in this final post is whether or not Toronto FC has managed to achieve the kind of depth that Aron Winter has stated that he is looking for. The coach would ideally like to see two quality players for each position on the field.

In goal that target has obviously been met with Milos Kocic and Stefan Frei representing one of the best one-two punches in MLS. With either of them in goal fans and coaching staff alike will be filled with confidence that they will be more than up to the task.

In front of them the depth seems to be much improved. Last season the backline was the glaring weakness of the team but this winter the club has made moves to improve on that record setting bad defense. The additions of Miguel Aceval, Geovanny Caicedo, and Aaron Maund have added much needed depth and they should combine with Ty Harden, Ashtone Morgan, and Richard Eckersley to form a much more reliable core. As for that goal the club seems to be there except at left back where the question remains of who will serve as backup for Ashtone Morgan. The club has options in the form of Jeremy Hall, Miguel Aceval, or trialist Kevin Huezo but those three would be either out of position or an unknown quantity.

The midfield is like the keepers and meets Winter's stated goal of having two quality players for each position. At the bottom of the triangle you have Torsten Frings, Julian De Guzman, Matt Stinson, and Terry Dunfield while the top has Eric Avila and Luis Silva.

In the forward department the big question in terms of depth is who will backup Danny Koevermans. The options are Ryan Johnson, who will likely be a utility man up front this year, or an academy grad like Keith Makabuya or Stefan Vukovic. On the wings things look a bit better with Joao Plata, Reggie Lambe, Nick Soolsma, and Johnson all capable of filling the two spots.

So on the whole Toronto FC seems to be close to reaching Winter's stated goal if even a few question marks remain. Find out how the depth chart looks after the jump.
