Before I started writing, I had an opportunity to interact with Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment's new President and Chief Operating Officer, Tom Anselmi . I approached him as a concerned season ticket holder with many of the same concerns that I have now. Pricing, investment in team infrastructure and belief in the leadership. I found him to be genuine in his desire to see the team win. Though I didn't necessarily agree with his response to my question, I respected that he would take the time to speak with me.
In learning the news yesterday that his tenure at TFC has earned him a promotion to oversee the other teams that I care about... well not the Raptors, I haven't watched a full basketball game in years... I was greeted with the sad realization that my season ticket support for TFC was most likely now coming to an end.
I thought about reaching out to him again for a glimmer of hope, that somehow there was a master plan for investment in scouting resources. Of a search for a quality head coach. The belief in scouring the USA and International markets for the best available players that could make the team better. Of a desire to hold on to draft picks based on a robust scouting department and to draft better than any other MLS team. Of finding a home for Academy grads not yet ready to play in MLS but to ensure that they continue to develop towards their dream. Of the faint hope that with knowledge that TFC is overcharging its fans by obscene amounts, that a ticket price correction would be forthcoming and we'd move forward with fair pricing and a goal of long term loyalty.
Then I heard him speaking on Sportsnet and TSN and in my opinion, doing everything but taking responsibility for the current state of the team and I lost all hope. Instead, I cracked open a beer and made this video.
Our society needs warning labels. Apparently, there are folks that believe that a Superman costume cape may enable them to fly. Hence, the warning that the cape does not in fact allow you to fly. Go figure. I too will offer you that same disclaimer. The quotes here are completely fictious. This is satire. In the simpliest disclaimer possible, this isn't a real interview with Tom Anselmi.
While it may not be real, it was really cathartic to make. Hope you enjoy.
