Canadian WNT gear up for Mexico friendly

One last Canadian soccer game in 2013 and this time it is the Canadian Women's National Team taking to the field in Vancouver against Mexico

The Canadian Soccer Association continues to prepare for hosting the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup and a big part of that is playing matches in the host cities to help build the excitement. Vancouver is up next as they will host a match between Canada and Mexico on November 24th. The match at BC Place will also be broadcast across the country on Sportsnet One.

John Herdman has named his roster for the friendly and it includes two exciting names for fans who have been following the program from more than just a few years. Sunday could mark the return to international play for both Kara Lang and Josée Bélanger. Both forwards spent nearly three years on the sidelines due to injuries and for quite a while it seemed that we had seem the last of them as both were considered retired. They have worked hard to come back though and that could all pay off on Sunday if they can get back on the field.

Once again Herdman has called on a lot of familiar faces for his squad. The core of the team remains the same with the likes of Erin McLeod, Diana Matheson, Sophie Schmidt, and Christine Sinclair again included in the team.

The fringe of the squad continues to see changing faces though as Herdman looks for potential contributors to the World Cup team. That means a second call up for 16-year-old Surra Yekka who made her first appearance against South Korea last month. Rachel Melhado, Kylla Sjoman, and Selenia Iacchelli also make the squad joining the regular faces. For Melhado it is her second time with the senior team, Sjoman could add to her single cap, and Iacchelli could represent Canada for the first time since she was with the U-20 team at the World Cup in 2006.

Herdman will trim down his roster from 23 players to 21 for the match against Mexico. The players have been taking part in a centralized development camp out in Burnaby, BC and this match will be their final competitive game of 2013.
