MLS Major Announcement
12:00 AM EST
Target Field, Minnesota
MLS really didn't try to hide that today's announcement in Minnesota will be about expansion, particularly to the St. Paul & Minneapolis area. Soccer has had a long and fairly prosperous time in the region, and now it appears they will be taking the next step into the top level of the sport in America.
A lot of questions remain, but some have already been answered. Dr. Bill McGuire will spearhead the team's ownership group. He is the current owner of the Minnesota United FC NASL team that has been playing in the league since 2010.
The event will be held at Target Field in Minnesota, the home of Major League Baseball's Minnesota Twins. Some have suggested this means a partnership between the Twins and the new soccer team has been reached. Details will likely be outlined at this press conference.
One of the big questions coming out of this is whether or not the team will maintain the same logo and name "Minnesota United FC" as they did during their NASL season. The logo was popular, and would definitely be a welcome addition to the league. Few teams have re-branded, as the Seattle Sounders among others have carried their lower league attributes into MLS.
