Toronto FC 1:2 Real Salt Lake: Highlights and Summary

A crazy referee robbery and some late game dramatics saw TFC lose 2:1 in Utah.

The first half actually started pretty positively from a TFC perspective - a few long balls into the attacking third were knocked down and the Reds held possession fairly well. As the first half wore on, though, RSL began better spells of ball movement, culminating in a cross to the back post that Luke Mulholland knocked home. There may have been a blown offside call in the build up leading to the goal, but the Hilario Grajeda and his assistants missed it. TFC can hardly feel hard done by, as the defending was very poor by TFC. A few minutes later Jaime slotted home as well, but this time was called back for offside.

The second half continued in Salt Lake’s favour. Much of the possession and attacking opportunities came from RSL. Around the 70th minute Hagglund had two beautiful chances from set pieces, the first at an awkward height that was collected easily by Jeff Attinella, the second being headed home before Grajeda called a phantom foul in the box.

Even after multiple viewings, there’s no real foul to spot in the box -- another bad call in a TFC game. TFC kept their heads up and Giovinco stung Attinella’s hands from a free kick a few moments later. Vanney seemed to think a point was up for grabs, throwing Jackson and Lovitz in as fullbacks and bringing Dike on for a rare MLS appearance. Vanney tactics paid off, as Jackson poked TFC level in 88th minute.

It was heartbreak just a minute later, though, as some shambolic defending let 19-year-old Jordan Allen head home from 5 yards. TFC kept the pressure high, though, and Findley had a gilt-edged chance off a Giovinco free kick early in stoppage time. TFC has to feel hard done by with the effort they put forward, but in the end some MLS-caliber refereeing and inability to deal with balls into the box that cost them 3 points. The reds are now 1-0-2 on their road trip, with a game at Chicago next week.
