No Major Surprises on Canadian 35-man Provisional Gold Cup Roster

New, 38 comments

It appears Tesho Akindele was an isolated incident and didn't convince any of the other fence sitters to jump ship and join the Canadian team.

After Canada released its most encouraging roster in years for the week's pair of World Cup qualifiers against Dominica, the Gold Cup roster didn't have many new faces. This isn't to say that the 35-man-provisional roster isn't deep or talented, it just won't make any headlines.

Akindele is included and joins a list of 14 MLS players who make up a solid chunk of the Canadian team. Toronto FC lead the way with four inclusions: keeper Quillan Roberts, defender Ashtone Morgan, midfielder Jonathan Osorio and forward Jonathan Hamilton.

Sam Adekugbe, Kianz Froese and Russell Teibert all play for the Vancouver Whitecaps, Max Tissot is becoming a more permanent fixture with the Montreal Impact, former teammate Karl Ouimette has found success this year with the New York Red Bulls Kyle Bekker is Akindele's teammate with FC Dallas, Marcel De Jong has featured for Sporting Kansas CIty this season despite injury, Will Johnson is returning to the Canadian team after a horrible injury with the Portland Timbers and Cyle Larin is the early favourite to win MLS rookie of the year for his play with Orlando City SC.

It is positive to see all of these players featuring domestically, and having this many players familiar with one another is something Floro will certainly be banking on in terms of team chemistry.

A number of young players have also been included but one would expected Hamilton and youth national team teammates Luca Gasparotto, Kianz Froese and Quillan Roberts among others to feature for the U-23 team at the Pan Am Games.

Considering what had happened with Akindele, there were some among Canadian soccer circles that were optimistic about the possibility of another of Canada's long list of fence sitters being named to the provisional roster.

Rumours earlier this year suggested that Junior Hoilett of Queen's Park Rangers was finally considering playing for his home and native land. His continued absence is telling, as is the fact that earlier this year Benito Floro suggested they hadn't talked since 2013.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is that Philadelphia Union loanee Steven Vitoria is still not on this Canadian squad, while has played for Portugal in the past there were suggestions made in the Philadelphia press that he was strongly considering Canada.

One unfortunate omission is Doneil Henry. While the talented centreback does appear to be recovering well from an injury that kept him out most of the season for Blackburn Rovers where he was on loan from West Ham, it has not healed in time to be called.

While there are no major surprises, this is still a strong roster for the Canadian team as they enter a crucial Gold Cup tournament. Floro has his group, now its time for him to show Canadian fans what he can do in games that will have a lasting impression.
