Canada vs. China

Commonwealth Stadium, Edmonton Alberta

There will thousands of people at the stadium in Edmonton as Canada take on China, but that will only be a fraction of the people watching all over the World. The tournament is expecting to set TV records for a women's World Cup, and a lot of that has to do with the popularity the Canadian team has in their home and native land.

Canadian social media has been an outpouring of support for the team as Canadians from coast to coast have taken to twitter to show that they are behind the team, making it one of the top trends in the country.

Be it celebrities, sports teams or sports leagues everyone is getting in on the act. It's refreshing to see, especially considering where soccer has always been on the sport's rankings in this country.

For their part, the team appear ready, in fact they even walked to the game in Edmonton which included stopping every couple of minutes to take a selfie.

This game will be a nice test for the Canadian team to start the tournament as China are definitely a team of quality in the women's game, even if the aren't on the competitions top teams. A win would go a long way to proving that the hosts are here to do more than just impress their many guests.

The Lineup

No big surprises in this Canadian team, who looks like they will line up in a 4-3-3, with Christine Sinclair, Melissa Tancredi and Janelle Filigno up front. Buchanen will be most important player in the Canadian backline that will look to make sure China can't get any momentum in this matc .

Sophie Schmidt will be the most important player in the Canadian midfield as she looks to provide link up play for the rest of the team. She will be the key to victory for Canada, especially if they look nervous in the early going. She is in a perfect position to turn a game around for this team.
