Swiss defender Beg Ferati set for Toronto FC move

Toronto FC are once again being closely linked to some much needed defensive reinforcements as FC Sion defender Beg Ferati could be set to make the move to MLS according to his current manager.

Toronto FC could be one step closer to addressing their pressing needs on the back line.  Despite the club's recent denials that any deal is imminent a report came out on Wednesday morning that the club could have a deal in place for a defender from FC Sion.

A report from Le Nouvelliste discusses the list of players that Didier Tholot will not be bringing back to FC Sion for the new season.  The manager is moving on without several players including Swiss defender Beg Ferati who he indicated has a deal in place that would see him move to Toronto.

Ferati, a defender born in the former Yugoslavia, made a name for himself playing in Switzerland where he worked his way up to an appearance in the national team back in 2011.  He has yet to receive a second cap for the national team though as his career has taken a bit of a step back in recent years.

During his time with FC Basel, Ferati was proving to be a talent young defender but after moves to SC Freiburg in 2011 and FC Sion in 2013 he has never really lived up to that early potential.  Now at 28-years-old it seems that Ferati could be heading towards another fresh start and this time it could be with Toronto.

Adding Ferati would make sense for TFC as he should be a player that should help shore up the defensive unit.  He has some Champions League experience, has been on the fringes of the national team, and was a promising defender not that long ago.

Ferati is still under contract with FC Sion but it is possible that they will release him from that deal since he is clearly not in their plans for the new season.  If Toronto FC could pick him up on a free transfer it would certainly make fitting him in to the budget a whole lot easier.

The MLS transfer window is now open so it could be time for Tim Bezbatchenko to start making his moves. One of those moves will almost certainly be signing an upgrade in defence and that could very well be Ferati.
