Toronto FC are looking to get some needed minutes for a pair of first team players ahead of this weekend's game against Orlando City. The club announced on Wednesday that goalkeeper Chris Konopka and defender Nick Hagglund will head down to Toronto FC II on short term loans.
The USL team is set to take on the Harrisburg City Islanders on Wednesday night so the duo could potentially log 90 minutes and be back with the first team and ready to go on the weekend. The pair getting minutes should help prepare them to potentially make their returns to the lineup after fairly lengthy spells on the sidelines.
Hagglund has been out of the starting lineup for a good chunk of the season as the defender has only made one start since the middle of May. In those three months he has played less than 115 minutes and is just making his way back in to match fitness after being sidelined by an emergency appendectomy.
Konopka on the other hand made 11 starts this season but has handed back the starting job in goal to Joe Bendik in recent weeks. Bendik has not been on exceptional form though so this could be the chance for Konopka to win back the job as the team enters a key stretch of games.
If Greg Vanney is going to turn to Konopka in goal on the weekend it would be wise to give him a game to regain sharpness since his last game was now over a month ago. If he does get the start against Orlando it would be a welcome change for a number of fans who have been clamouring to see him back in goal after some terrible defensive performances in recent weeks.
Vanney getting Hagglund and Konopka prepared for the weekend should not be a surprise to anyone as the coach is clearly in need of some answers at the back. He has tried just about every other combination in defence the past few weeks so it might just be time to give this duo a chance to show what they can do.
