Sebastian Giovinco is the most valuable player in the league. Hands down, bar none, no question about it. Whether you think the MVP goes to "best" or "most important to his team", Gio has it locked down. The only player who is remotely close is Benny Feilhaber. The American midfielder has performed better than most could have predicted. He pulls the strings in the SKC attack and does important defensive work as well.
TFC and SKC were involved in the business side of things this weekend as well - with the Reds acquiring the six-year-old rights to Herculez Gomez. The 33-year-old American give TFC three-quarters of USA's 2010 strike force - Gomez, Jozy Altidore, and Robbie Findley. Edson Buddle, the fourth striker, is languishing on the bench at L.A Galaxy. (Don't expect the Reds to make an offer)
Match Talking Points
While the weekend's business was a surprise to most - there were few, if any rumours about Gomez before the club announced the signing - this game was already on most MLS fans must-watch list. The MVP showdown is not one to be missed. Unfortunately, some of the more integral supporting cast is going to miss out on both sides. Roger Espinoza and Dom Dwyer will both be out for SKC, while Damien Perquis and Benoit Cheyrou are suspended for the Reds. Perquis picked up a 5th Yellow against Orlando, while Cheyrou was suspended for a tackle on Servando Carrasco
What used to be an in-conference battle is now a cross-conference one. SKC moved conferences to balance things out during the expansion season. Nevertheless, the Reds will want 3 points at home.
TFC Starting XI
Jackson was downright impressive at right back against Orlando - both offensively and defensively. When Cheyrou does draw into the lineup, we find the answer to "Who sits?" Warner, Osorio, and Delgado have all been in excellent form. Vanney certainly has a tough choice to make.
Keys to the Game
While the Giovinco/Feilhaber duel takes centre stage, on the field it will be Bradley and Feilhaber matching up. Whichever American midfielder can boss the game will control the outcome.
Jozy Altidore is back from suspension and needs to put the incident in New England behind him. After a frustrating Gold Cup and last week's minor episode, getting back into the goals needs to be a priority.
