Montreal vs Toronto delayed due to pitch markings blunder

This is a great thing to happen in front of 61,000 fans and national TV cameras.

People have worried about the weather. People have worried about the turf. No one was worried about this.

Somehow, the Montreal Impact ground staff managed to delay the scheduled kick-off of their Eastern Conference final first leg against Toronto FC by incorrectly measuring the dimensions of the penalty area on the Olympic Stadium pitch.

The officials subsequently ordered that the lines be repainted, which revealed that they didn’t even just get it slightly wrong - they were way off.

TSN presenter Andi Petrillo summed up the comedy of the situation best: Instead of arguably the biggest club game in Canadian soccer history, we are literally watching paint dry.

On the one hand, of course, it’s hilarious. On the other, this is not what you want to happen on national television with the kind of crowd (of 61,000+) that is supposed to be an example of why it’s time to take MLS seriously.
