The Headliner: Getting the new season off on the right foot.
Due to a number of different factors Toronto FC II struggled mightily in their first USL season. They finished near the bottom of the league and were among the league's worst teams both offensively and defensively. It was kind of to be expected as a new team in a new league, but nonetheless is something they will be looking to move on from in 2016.
They can get off to a good start in that regard in their season opener today against New York Red Bulls II. Similar to the senior team, they will start their season on the road in Harrison, New Jersey as this afternoon's game will be played at Red Bull Arena.
However, unlike the senior team they do not have a massive road trip to start the season. Construction on their home field, the Ontario Soccer Centre, was completed last year. Their home opener takes place on April 17, when they will take on the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.
Toronto FC II's opponent today, Red Bulls II, are certainly a difficult challenge to start the season. The Red Bulls were 12-10-6, good enough for fourth in the Eastern Conference last year compared to Toronto FC's dismal 6-17-5.
Toronto FC II will be getting some help from the senior team for today's match however, as Toronto FC sent down four players earlier this week. The club has loaned keeper Alex Bono, Chris Mannella, Mo Babouli and Mark Bloom down to TFC II.
The first two were expected to spend most of the season with Toronto FC II, as Mannella was the captain last year and Bono shared the net with Quillan Roberts. Babouli, meanwhile, recently signed a senior deal and made his MLS debut last weekend. Bloom has not played in some time after spending most of last year injured, this will be a good chance for him to improve his fitness.
