The Headliner: An Unknown Opponent
Canada and Azerbaijan have never played each other before in a senior men's national team game. As a result, the two will know little about each other prior to today's match in Austria.
For Canada, that means focusing on their own game, and now worrying too much about playing a style that matches the opponent. The national team has been victimised by a style matching mentality in the past, so today will be a good change in that regard.
Canada can then focus on what they have been working on all camp: restructuring a defensive shape that fell apart at times against Mexico and creating, and finishing, more chances going forward. Canada has not scored in its last four international matches, and has conceded six goals in that time.
While Azerbaijan represents a good test for Canada, they are also an opponent that Canada should be able to beat. The European country ranks 138th in the world currently, and recently lost 3-1 against lowly ranked Macedonia. Azerbaijan is also preparing for the next round of UEFA World Cup qualifiers.
