There was an extra special energy in the air today at BMO Field ahead of an always exciting clash with the Montreal Impact. In front of their arch-rivals, Toronto FC were presented with the most significant piece of silverware they have won to date: the 2017 Supporters’ Shield.

Toronto FC had initially clinched the shield with a 4-2 win over the New York Red Bulls back on September 30. However, the trophy itself was not at BMO Field on that date and therefore the celebrations felt a little incomplete.

The club certainly got their moment in the sun today, however, soaking in being named the league’s best regular season team this season. Members of various TFC supporters groups gathered at centre field to lift the trophy.

As its name would suggest, supporters are the caretakers of the trophy, and therefore an FC Dallas supporter was in attendance to hand the trophy to its new winners. When it became apparent that the club was going to win the shield, TFC supporters circled today’s match against Montreal as the day they would like to lift the trophy.

While the festivities were taking place on the field, Toronto FC fans in the south end unveiled yet another creative tifo. This time it was a large replica of the Supporters’ Shield surrounded by other fans holding up red boards to make it stand out more.

Under the display was a banner that displayed popular Drake lyrics “started from the bottom now we’re here. It was certainly a Supporters’ Shield celebration with a Toronto flavour.
