Toronto FC have handed a trial to Gremio right-back Raul, Waking the Red can confirm.
The 20-year-old, who has represented Brazil at Under-20 level, has travelled to Toronto as the Reds search for depth at wing-back.
Earlier on Monday, Brazilian outlet UOL Esporte reported that Gremio had agreed to loan Raul to Toronto for a year after extending his contract until 2019.
We have been told, however, that the youngster has initially travelled for a trial before a further decision is made.
Raul is currently a member of Gremio’s ‘transition’ group, which is comprised of young players who have graduated from the Under-20 team and support the first-team squad.
He most recently featured for his country’s Under-20 side in September of last year, when Brazil travelled to England for a pair of friendlies against the Three Lions.
Raul then appears to have suffered a serious injury, however, which ruled him out of the South American Under-20 Championship early in 2017. He made his return in April.
Toronto are yet to announce the extent of the pancreas problem that forced first-choice right-back Steven Beitashour into hospital late in June. The veteran is now home but facing a spell on the sidelines as he recovers from surgery.
In his absence, rookie Oyvind Alseth has stepped in. Given the Norwegian is fresh out of college with little professional experience under his belt, though, the Reds were always likely to pursue a new signing during the summer transfer window if they anticipated being without Beitashour for a lengthy period of time.
The latest MLS transfer window opened today and will close on August 9.
