Canada and former Toronto FC midfielder Will Johnson was arrested on a domestic violence charge early on Wednesday morning.

Johnson, 30 and now of Orlando City, was subsequently held in Orange County Jail pending bail, which was set at $500.

According to WFTV and the Orange County Sentinel, both of whom have obtained a police report, Johnson is alleged to have assaulted his wife, Caroline Childs Johnson, after an argument.

When Johnson attempted to record the argument his wife grabbed his phone, the report says, turning off the recording before walking away out of a patio door.

After that, Johnson is said to have “tackled [his wife] by wrapping both of his arms completely around her waist.

“[His wife] fell to the ground and hit the right side of her head on the brick patio. [She] also scrapped (sic) her right knee, left hand and right arm from the fall.”

Childs Johnson told police that the couple are going through a divorce.

It appears they had been together on Tuesday to celebrate the third birthday of their son Jaxx.

Orlando City and MLS have released the following statements:

Statement from Major League Soccer:

Orlando City SC midfielder Will Johnson was arrested Wednesday and charged with misdemeanor battery in connection with an alleged domestic incident. Johnson has been suspended pending investigations by MLS and the Orlando Police Department. Major League Soccer will remain in close communication with Orlando City SC, local law enforcement, and the MLS Players Union during this investigation.

MLS will not have further comment on this matter until the conclusion of the League’s investigation.

Statement from Orlando City SC:

Orlando City SC midfielder Will Johnson was arrested early Wednesday morning in connection with an alleged domestic dispute.

We are working closely with MLS and local authorities through this matter and fully support the League's decision to suspend the player pending further investigation.

The Club will not provide further comment until the investigation into this alleged incident is complete.

Johnson is the second Canadian international at Orlando to be arrested this year. In June, Cyle Larin was arrested on a DUI charge.

Capped 43 times by Canada, Johnson was traded to Toronto from the Portland Timbers in December of 2015.

He spent one season with the Reds, making 32 appearances in all competitions, and scored the winning goal in the Canadian Championship final - breaking his leg in the process.

Johnson was part of Octavio Zambrano’s Canada squad for the friendly against Jamaica but later dropped out due to a fitness concern.

He then featured as a substitute, however, for Orlando in their road match against the New England Revolution on September 2.

This is the Toronto-born player’s 11th season in MLS. He has also spent time in the Netherlands, playing for Heerenveen and De Graafschap, and had a brief spell in Blackburn Rovers’ academy in England.
