Footy Talks Podcast: At what point do we panic about Toronto FC?

That red line is getting further and further away

MLS: Toronto FC at New England Revolution Bob DeChiara-USA TODAY Sports

Toronto FC have proven to be good under pressure. The Concacaf Champions League campaign, last year’s playoffs, even the Voyageurs Cup. When there is a must win game Toronto FC almost always comes out on top.

They probably didn’t expect to be playing pressure packed games this early in the MLS season, though. After emerging from the gauntlet that was the CCL, the reds are now arguably fighting for their playoff lives in mid-May.

It is too early to panic, and there have been a lot of overreactions to this run by fans who rightly expect a higher standard than the club has shown of late. But to put it plainly, Toronto FC have to start winning games very soon.

Mitchell Tierney and Charlie O’Connor-Clarke talk about when it’s time to really start to worry about Toronto FC on this week’s edition of the Footy Talks podcast.

They also discuss Toronto FC’s salary cap situation, which looks increasingly tight heading into this summer’s transfer window. Can TFC really afford to add anyone new without subtracting a decent piece from their current roster? Who are the payers who are making more than we expected with the salary cap release, and who is making a surprisingly low amount?

This week’s show also wraps up with discussion about York 9, and what Charlie learned from attending the club’s launch event about both the league and its first ever official club.

Also on the show: the Europa League final, EPL and Bundesliga wrap ups, World Cup rosters and a very intriguing soccer museum artifact.
