Pretty much since his first season with Toronto FC, Sebastian Giovinco has been attracted transfer rumours from around the globe. Remember when he turned down an offer from Barcelona? Or when he was apparently going to China?
Well, the latest rumour around the Atomic Ant comes after he turned a whole lot of heads during the CONCACAF Champions League. A report from the Mexican outlet La Afición (explained in English here) suggested that Tigres UANL are interested in signing Giovinco from TFC this summer.
Mexican journalist Omar Zeron also posted a cheeky, cryptic tweet, which hinted at Giovinco going to Tigres.
The proposed deal would send the 31-year-old Giovinco to Monterrey, with Ecuadorian international Enner Valencia coming back to Toronto along with cash. Valencia, 28, played in the first leg of the CCL quarter-final, but not the second.
Seba is, of course, looking for a new contract with TFC, after he expressed a desire to see out his career in Toronto. If the club won’t meet his demands, though, he’ll have to start thinking about his future fairly soon.
Frankly, this feels a lot like either Giovinco and his agent trying to make waves and speed along contract negotiations, or Tigres trying to plant the idea. It’s probably pretty unlikely to happen either way, but TFC will definitely already know that Giovinco can, and will, leave if he can’t secure his future in Toronto.
