It’s nearly that time again! The 2018 FIFA World Cup starts on Thursday, June 14, and even though Canada (and the United States!) won’t be participating, the entire country will be watching along with the rest of the world as the best this sport has to offer compete for football’s ultimate prize.
This is the first of several World Cup-related posts we’ll be rolling out at WTR over the next few weeks, because how can you call yourself a soccer blog if you ignore the World Cup? We thought it would be fun to get a little competitive with it by making our own fantasy league for the tournament.
Follow this link to join our league! You’ll have to either log in or create an account, after which you can start building your team. You have, I believe a €100 million budget with which to pick eleven starters and four bench players. Any player named to a World Cup squad is available — from the most expensive (Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Cristiano Ronaldo) right down to the cheapest.
You can customize your formation and pick your captain. I also believe you get to change up your team after the group stage (so you can drop anyone who didn’t qualify for the knockout round). You can also make substitutions after every day’s matches are done. Also, you only get three players from any one country, which really threw a wrench into my plans.
The scoring seems pretty similar to MLS fantasy, by the way.
In case you’re wondering, I’ve named my team Curly, Harry, and Mo because of my world-beating attacking combo.
Feel free to criticize, I just won’t agree with you:
Once again, here’s the link for joining the league. Let us know who you’ve picked! You have until Thursday.
