Toronto FC star Sebastian Giovinco took to Instagram this afternoon to dispel transfer rumours that arose from his previous post on the social platform. A day ago, he posted a picture of himself with just a waving hand emoji for a caption, prompting fans to infer that he was saying goodbye:

The post also attracted comments from a lot of Tigres UANL fans, as Seba has been linked with the Liga MX club in rumours this year. A quick look at the replies to his post show that it was primarily Tigres supporters believing he was on his way to Monterrey.

However, today Giovinco reassured TFC fans, many of whom also believed the rumours. He posted a photo with the caption “I said hi not goodbye,” and a number of his Toronto teammates (including Chris Mavinga, Jay Chapman, Tosaint Ricketts, Alex Bono, and Drew Moor) joined in on the comments to voice their support.

It’s hard to tell what exactly he meant with his initial post; it’s likely that the message just didn’t come off as intended. Perhaps he’d like to stir the pot a bit as he vies for a new contract. Maybe he wants to sell more hats.

Regardless, for him to come out and silence the rumours so quickly suggests that he’s not intending on leaving in the near future.
