There will be playoff soccer in Toronto in October.
Toronto FC has officially clinched a home playoff game in the opening round of the MLS Cup Playoffs after a 1-0 win over the Columbus Crew SC on Decision Day Sunday afternoon at BMO Field.
In what was looking like a rather unlikely outcome after starting the day in sixth place, the Reds secured fourth place in the East after some fortunate results around the rest of the conference.
401 Rivals Montreal Impact helped TFC out by overcoming the New York Red Bulls (3-0) at the Stade Saptuto with two first half goals essentially putting the match to bed.
And the Reds will play Wayne Rooney’s D.C. United after D.C. were unable to overcome a nine-man FC Cincinnati team — without the suspended Rooney — (0-0) at Audi Field.
The former Manchester United player will be back in the lineup when his side travels to the 6ix to take on a streaking Toronto FC team in a one-and-done knockout game in the opening round of the MLS Cup Playoffs — a match that could be Rooney’s final in MLS.
