Toronto FC announced today that the football club will open the 2020 Major League Soccer campaign in February for the first time in franchise history, less than four months since their frustrating 3-1 loss to the Seattle Sounders.
The 2019 MLS Cup Finalists will kick off their 14th MLS campaign on the west coast where they’ll take on the San Jose Earthquakes on Sat. Feb. 29 at 5:30 p.m. EST.
In their only meeting a year ago, San Jose got the better of Toronto FC at BMO Field (2-1) on the back of a Chris Wondolowksi brace. Last season, the Earthquakes led by Wondolowski, finished just outside the playoffs in the Western Conference, so they’ll be eager to get things going on the right foot.
Feb. 29 will be the earliest that TFC have ever started an MLS season. Prior to that, the earliest they began an MLS campaign was on Mar. 2 — on two occasions (last year vs. Philadelphia Union and in 2013 against the Vancouver Whitecaps).
The Reds also also announced that their 2020 home opener will be on Mar. 7 at 5 p.m. EST — a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference semifinal against New York City FC. Make sure you bundle up if you plan on making your way to BMO Field in early March, as Alejandro Pozuelo always has some magic up his sleeve in these fixtures!
