Toronto FC are bound for Seattle to face their toughest challenge of this young MLS season. Here’s a couple fun numbers I’ll be keeping an eye on today.
Altidore On The Bounce
Jozy Altidore has now scored in Toronto FC’s last three league matches. If he finds the net on Saturday, he’ll rejoin a select list of players who’ve scored in 4+ consecutive MLS matches played by TFC (regular season and playoff). Altidore shares the club record with Danny Koevermans and Dwayne DeRosario, who both scored six goals over five matches. Jozy’s incredible run happened during the 2016 playoffs - when he tallied against Philadelphia and then in both legs vs. New York City FC and Montreal Impact. There’s no reason to spend any time discussing how that streak ended — or about Stefan Frei’s left hand in general.
Chad Marshall could set a unique mark if he faces Toronto this Saturday. Marshall will become the first opponent to face TFC in all 13 of their seasons. For the first seven campaigns, Marshall donned the yellow of Columbus Crew SC before moving to Seattle in 2014. The only other men who have a shout at this club are Jeff Larentowicz and Kyle Beckerman. Dominic Oduro isn’t expected to play in MLS this season, so his streak will end at 12 years.
Toronto will be looking to add points from their fifth straight league match, a feat they went the entire 2018 without achieving. If they do get a result in Seattle, it will be the longest such streak since that historic run which lasted the entirety of the Summer of ’17. That treble winning summer saw the club go an astonishing 11 matches in 80 days without defeat in the league.
