Canada’s Women’s World Cup squad announced

With just over two weeks to go until they begin the tournament, Canada Soccer has released their 23-player roster for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France. The squad that will try to improve on last tournament’s sixth-place finish features nine returning players from four years ago, as well as 14 players making their World Cup debuts.

Canada will be led yet again by 35-year-old superstar Christine Sinclair, who needs to score just three times to tie American Abby Wambach’s record for career international goals. This will be Sinclair’s fifth World Cup.

The squad has a number of other familiar faces from previous international tournaments, including Kadeisha Buchanan, Jessie Fleming, Sophie Schmidt, and goalkeeper Stephanie Labbé.

The veteran presence is complemented by younger talents, like budding star Jordyn Huitema, who has 19 senior national team caps despite turning 18 less than a month ago.

Canada has been drawn into Group E, where they’ll play the Netherlands (eighth in the world rankings), New Zealand (19th), and Cameroon (46th). Canada sit fifth in the latest rankings.

The Canadian team’s matches will take place in Montpellier, Grenoble, and Reims. They take on Cameroon on June 10, followed by New Zealand on June 15, with a potentially group-deciding match with the Netherlands on June 20.
