Saturday was only the start. Get ready to watch a whole lot of soccer over the next couple of weeks. The Canadian Premier League has launched, which means weekends are now filled with homegrown footy.
To add to all of that, Saturday also kicked off a stretch of five games in 15 days for Toronto FC. They take on Atlanta tomorrow, then it is Philadelphia, D.C. United and Real Salt Lake. It’s a stretch where we will learn a lot about this team, and perhaps some personnel decisions going forward.
First and foremost is the goalkeeping situation, which James Grossi of MLSSoccer.com and CanPL.ca discuss at length on this week’s Footy Talks podcast. Is the starting job Quentin Westberg’s now after his incredible match against Orlando City SC?
They also discuss the development of Jay Chapman, and Toronto FC youngsters to keep an eye on in the year ahead. They chat about Greg Vanney’s development philosophy, and how this can help us to see the development pathway for youngsters like Jayden Nelson.
Finally, the show wraps up with some Canadian Premier League talk. Mitchell and James talk about some of the league’s young players they will be watching, and how it has already created a unique opportunity for them.
