TFC II have late winner erased in 0-0 draw with Greenville Triumph

Mehdi Essoussi thought he had scored the winner, but the assistant referee thought otherwise

After a stoppage time goal was called offside, Toronto FC II and Greenville Triumph SC settled for a draw at the BMO Training Ground on Friday afternoon.

After Greenville beat TFC II 3-1 in their previous visit north of the border, The Young Reds were looking for payback.

The first 45 minutes of the match were pretty uneventful, with the only event of significance being a yellow card to Greenville right back Cole Seiler in the 36th minute. Greenville had a couple of efforts stopped by II goalkeeper Eric Klenofsky at the end of the half, but neither really challenged him.

Jake Keegan nearly found the back of the net in the opening minute of the second 45, just heading the ball wide of the TFC II goal. That was the best chance of the half for Greenville, who also came close a couple of times at the end of the match.

Toronto FC II thought they had a late winner in the final moments of the match, as Mehdi Essoussi redirected the ball into the goal, but the assistant referee called him offside. It wasn’t a difficult call, but it was still disappointing for TFC II, who thought they had taken all three points and snapped their winless streak (which has now reached six games).

Here are the full highlights from Friday’s match:

Up next for II is a trip down south to play North Texas SC on Sunday, September 1st. That game, from FC Dallas’ Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas, is scheduled to kickoff at 7 pm ET.
