TORONTO, Canada—Major League Soccer revealed its Week 22 Team of the Week on Monday and once again finding his name among last match day’s top performers was Toronto FC defender Richie Laryea.
Checking into a tie game in the 72nd minute against Inter Miami CF on Sunday, the super-sub once again managed to make a difference. 10 minutes after coming onto the field, Laryea drove past his defender down the right-hand side before earning penalty that was slotted away by Alejandro Pozuelo for the eventual game winner.
Creating has been the 25 year old’s trademark since arriving in Toronto, producing four goals and five assists in 20 appearances (12 starts) in 2020. He has created a number of goals that he also wasn’t given credit for as a result of a few slight deflections—but that doesn’t mean his impact hasn’t been recognized.
The Canadian international has been named to the MLS Team of the Week four times this season; MVP-candidate Pozuelo is the only other Toronto FC player with as many nominees. Perhaps even more prestigious, Laryea, along with centre-back Chris Mavinga, was also recently nominated for the 2020 MLS Defender of the Year.
For those interested, I believe award winners will be revealed either later this month or early in December. Do you feel Laryea should be considered among this year’s top performers? Let us know in the comments!
Also! With what he’s been able to accomplish off the bench, and considering the Reds’ depth at fullback, would you rather see Laryea start for Greg Vanney’s side in the postseason or would you rather perhaps like to see Laryea deployed as a secret weapon, a joker if you will, against tired legs later in games?
