TORONTO, Canada—For those hoping to see Laurent Blanc on the touchline at BMO Field managing Toronto FC in 2021, you may want to turn away.
Mohamed Bouhafsi from RMC Sport was first to report on Friday that the former Paris Saint-Germain manager was already in Qatar and set to join Al-Rayyan SC.
The move comes about a week after Toronto FC were reportedly set to interview Blanc for their vacant head coaching and technical director position, which has been vacant since Greg Vanney stepped down on Dec. 1.
Blanc was reportedly one of Toronto FC general manager Ali Curtis’ preferred candidates, along with Patrick Vieira. My best bet is that there are a few other notable names that the TFC GM holds in high regard that have yet to surface.
But for what it’s worth, both Team President Bill Manning and Curtis are biting their tongues on the matter.
“Ali and I have agreed that we’re not going to tip our hat one way or the other,” Manning told The Toronto Sun last week when asked about dealings with Blanc and Vieira.
Gareth Wheeler of One Soccer and Toronto FC did report Thursday night, however, that the Reds’ coaching search would be narrowed down to a final list of candidates next week, meaning it’s unlikely that we will find out who the Reds’ next head coach will be in the near future.
So, how do we feel about this news TFC fans? Was this a bullet dodged by the club? Or did the Reds miss out here? Let us know in the comments.
