The award this year should come as no surprise to anyone that has seen the Edmonton-natives play through the long 2019-2020 season. In fact ,Canada Soccer, which will announce the women’s award winner on Friday, said Davies earned a record vote total from Canadian media and coaches, finishing just ahead of Christine Sinclair’s record set in 2012.
After helping Bayern Munich to an eighth consecutive Bundesliga title, a DFB Pokal, and a UEFA Champions League to complete a remarkable treble, the young Canuck was also able to celebrate a DFL-Supercup and the UEFA Super Cup.
Five team trophies in the span of a year is incredible enough for any player, but the style of play, and the confidence of a Canadian teenager playing in a new left-back role earned Davies all the credit he rightfully deserved. In the UCL alone, against some of the world’s best footballing opposition, Davies put out highlight reel performances, making his name as one of the best in the position, both at the back, and on the attack. His speed definitely helped in that regard. On 16 June 2020, he set an all-time Bundesliga record with the fastest in-match speed at 36.51 km/h.
Even before winning any trophies this calendar year, ‘The Roadrunner’ as he was dubbed by Bayern team-mate Thomas Muller, was awarded with a new contract at the team till 2025, adding two years to his existing contract.
The praise for his work didn’t end there, however. Davies was named Bundesliga rookie of the year in voting by fans, clubs and the media. He also came third in voting for the Golden Boy award, which was won by Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland. His phenomenal display throughout Bayern’s Champions League dominance was also recognized by UEFA, as he was shortlisted as a nominee for UEFA’s Team of the Year and Defender of the Year.
“I think that everything that came with 2020 was amazing,” Alphonso Davies told reporters on Thursday, when asked about his favourite moment from the past year. “From winning the league, to winning the German cup, to winning the Champions League, to winning five titles in a year—it’s amazing, and I’m happy that I was part of that, and I’m happy that I could be able to lift those trophies. As I said before, I carry the Canadian flag with pride...”
The news of Davies being named the Canadian men’s player of the year comes on the same day he makes a full return to team training. The young full-back has not featured in a match since picking up an ankle injury against Eintracht Frankfurt on October 24.
