TORONTO, Canada—The list is likely very long, but reports out of Boston have linked former Paris Saint-Germain manager Laurent Blanc and former New York City head coach Patrick Vieira as the next replacement for Greg Vanney.
According to Frank Dell’Apa of The Boston Globe, the Reds are interviewing both Blanc and Viera, likely for the head coaching and tactical director position which has been vacant since Vanney stepped down Dec. 1.
As of 3:00 p.m. EST Wednesday, multiple sources have confirmed that Blanc and Viera are both indeed going to be interviewed by the Reds.
Ali Curtis and Bill Manning spoke to reporters on Dec. 1 and emphasized the significance of getting the right person for the job, explaining that they were not afraid to spend for their next head coach, often referring to Toronto FC as a big club.
Blanc, a French icon, would certainly fit the bill. After a successful playing career which included stints at Manchester United, Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Napoli among other sides, the former France international would find success on the touchline, most recently managing PSG from 2013 to 2016, before mutually parting ways with the club.
It looks like he’s been out of the game ever since his PSG departure, but with 97 caps under his belt for France, securing a name like Blanc would certainly enhance the global reputation of Toronto FC, who are looking to build on the success of their greatest manager in club history.
Update (2:45 p.m. EST)—Multiple sources have now confirmed that Blanc is interviewing for the vacant manager position. Duane Rollins (@24thminute) says that both of these gentleman are Ali Curtis’ ‘preferred candidates.’
Vieira, the former Arsenal star, has also been linked with Vanney’s former position. He most recently coached at Ligue 1 side Nice, but was let go due to poor performance. One of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history, Viera has shown that he can find some success as a manager in MLS, however, helping NYCFC to a 40W-22D-28L record between 2016 and 2018 before departing for Nice.
During the Curtis/Manning call with reporters, Curtis joked that he had to mute his phone because he had been receiving so many calls for the coveted position, so it’s likely that Blanc and Vieira are just two of the many names that the Reds are interviewing.
Earlier this month, The Athletic reported that Olsen was also among the the list of names.
So would you be okay with either of these gentleman at the helm of Toronto FC in 2021?
