TORONTO, Ont.—Major League Soccer announced today their Week 2 Team of the Week, and it has included Toronto FC’s rookie sensation.
After the winger made a splash in his professional debut Saturday night in Toronto FC’s 1-0 win over New York City FC, Achara becomes the first TFC player to be named to the MLS Team of the Week this season, securing a spot in the league’s starting XI.
Achara, 22, found out 90 minutes prior to kickoff that he’d be starting the game following a training injury to Tsubasa Endoh. And while he had a first-half marker disallowed after a VAR check for offside, the rook was not going to let a little adversity spoil his night.
In the 80th minute, Achara got on the end of a Richie Laryea shot/cross, sending the faithful around BMO Field into a frenzy—for the second time in the match.
Since being drafted, Achara has scored in every match that he has appeared in, dating back to the beginning of preseason. When Toronto FC drafted the Nigerian from Georgetown University 25th overall this past SuperDraft, Greg Vanney told us that he had multiple people reach out to him to tell him that TFC had something there. Less than two months later, we start to see why.
We get the sense that this may not be the rookie’s only time finding his name on the league-wide team sheet.
