BMO Field to expand to 45,000 seats ahead of 2026 World Cup

TORONTO, Canada—BMO Field is going to be getting bigger!

According to Toronto FC President Bill Manning via an interview with OneSoccer, BMO Field, the home of Toronto FC and the Toronto Argonauts, will be expanding to 45,000 seats ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

As it stands, BMO Field’s current seating capacity is 30,000 for a soccer match but possesses the ability to hold 40,000 for monumental occasions. In 2018, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Detroit Red Wings participated in the Centennial Classic—an outdoor game at BMO Field—with 40,148 people attending.

It’s unclear at this time what specific renovations will take place in order to accommodate more seating.

The 2026 World Cup will be jointly held in all three of Canada, the United States, and Mexico, with 16 cities playing host—including Toronto. It will be the first World Cup since 2002 that will be hosted by more than one nation, and the first by more than two.
