TORONTO, Canada—As if the odds weren’t stacked against Toronto FC enough, it appears the Reds will have to earn a result down in Mexico against Club León without their most valuable player: Alejandro Pozuelo.
According to Meixcan reporter Paco Montes of Fox Sports Mexico, Pozuelo is expected to miss the Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 opening leg on Wednesday due to injury.
This is yet to be confirmed, but it appears that Alejandro Pozuelo will not be available for Toronto FC tomorrow vs. Club Leon. FWIW, if true, I suspect Pozuelo won't be the only Red absent. https://t.co/EkjXYxIqCt— Michael Singh (@MichaelSingh94) April 6, 2021
As many TFC fans have pointed out, the No. 10 was absent from the brief highlight package released by the club following their preseason win over the Columbus Crew on April 1. He did, however, score in their tune-up vs. USL side Fort Lauderdale CF on March 27.
In 24 matches last season, the Spaniard scored nine times—including five game-winners—and had an MLS-best 10 assists. Pozuelo also became the first player in franchise history to start every regular season match in a campaign.
Toronto FC will already be without Ayo Akinola (undisclosed) and Tsubasa Endoh (training injury), as well as a few other names that head coach Chris Armas’ is keeping close to his vest.
Kickoff Wednesday is slated for 8 pm ET. You can watch the match on OneSoccer.
