TORONTO, Canada—After opening his bank account in Major League Soccer with his first career MLS goal on Saturday, Toronto FC winger Jacob Shaffelburg has been named to the Week 5 MLS Team of the Week.
“It feels great,” said Shaffelburg after Saturday’s match. “Feels like a weight is lifted off my back. I know you’re not supposed to do it, but I kept on myself to get a goal and it was getting a bit much. It was a breath of fresh air getting that weight off my back.”
Head coach Chris Armas was also happy to see the hard-working winger get rewarded with a goal.
“As a staff, we’ve known Jacob because we’ve seen him play for Toronto and against us as well in the past,” said the former New York Red Bulls coach. “What’s easy to see is he’s quick, he runs, he likes to press, he brings energy and plays with intensity. He’s such a good boy, he really is such a good kid, and we are now trying to push the demands every day. Not necessarily to be not too nice on the field but—how can we help him use his weapon?
“And I think what he has thanked us for is the confidence. I think every player could use that, right? ... So yeah, it’s so much about confidence, so much about giving opportunity to young guys and so much about helping him just calm down and get the reward...”
While the 21-year-old speedster finds his name on the bench, he can lay claim to the fact that he is the first Toronto FC player this season to be named to the MLS Team of the Week.
