TORONTO, Canada—Toronto FC forward Ayo Akinola and five other Toronto FC players have been named to Canada’s extended squad that will train with the national team in Florida ahead of FIFA World Cup Qualifiers this weekend.
Akinola, who is also eligible to represent the United States and Nigeria, was named to the 11-player practice squad which includes fellow TFC young guns Jahkeele Marshall-Rutty, Jayden Nelson, Noble Okello, Ralph Priso, and Luke Singh (who was also named to the Trinidad and Tobago senior team earlier this week).
Participating on the practice squad will not cap-tie any of the aforementioned players, but it does give John Herdman and company to showcase what the Canadian men’s national team is all about.
Akinola was supposed to join the Canada side for their camp in January—a non-cap-tying camp—but missed out due to injury.
