Meaning the Reds’ lineup should look exactly as it did for the MLS Cup final.

Chris Mavinga will miss Toronto FC’s season opener at Real Salt Lake but Victor Vazquez should be available to play, according to Greg Vanney.

Mavinga returned to France towards the tail end of the Reds’ preseason trip to Florida for the birth of his child, missing the final friendly against the Chicago Fire.

He will not return to Toronto until later in the week, meaning Vanney will hold him out of the match in Utah on Saturday afternoon.

Vazquez is fit for selection but unlikely to start with only an hour’s worth of friendly minutes under his belt since signing just over a week ago. Expect him to feature among the substitutes, with last season’s midfield trio of Jonathan Osorio, Armando Cooper and Michael Bradley picking up where they left off.

Similarly, the MLS Cup final three-man defensive unit of Eriq Zavaleta, Drew Moor and Nick Hagglund is likely to start on day one as a result of Mavinga’s absence. Clement Simonin featured prominently during preseason but remains, far as we know publicly, unsigned, meaning first-round pick Brandon Aubrey is currently in line for a place on the bench.

Clint Irwin, Justin Morrow, Steven Beitashour, Sebastian Giovinco and Jozy Altidore are all fit to complete the lineup that lost on spot kicks to the Seattle Sounders in December.
