The eight Toronto FC nominees for the MLS All-Star Game Fan XI have been revealed! This means essentially nothing...
While the players named to the Fan XI are not guaranteed a spot on the gameday roster, the outcome of fan voting is taken into consideration as the 22-man roster is decided.
...but it is a thing, so here we are.
Your TFC choices are Alex Bono, Nick Hagglund, Justin Morrow, Michael Bradley, Raheem Edwards, Victor Vazquez, Jozy Altidore and Sebastian Giovinco.
Each club has eight nominees and fans can vote for 10 members of the Fan XI via the MLS app (now) and website (from June 3). The 11th spot, for a forward, is given to the player who fans score the most goals with on FIFA 17 during the voting period.
From there, Chicago Fire and All-Star Game coach Veljko Paunovic will disregard your amateurish opinions and pick 20 players himself from the eight per team nominated by the media. Commissioner Don Garber then gets the final two choices to avoid the embarrassment of Andrea Pirlo and Kaka being left at home when Real Madrid visit.
My opinion is that Bradley, Vazquez and Morrow have been arguably the best players in MLS in their respective positions and should be on the 22-man roster, getting their names on the 2017 section of the Wall of Honour outside BMO Field in the process.
Altidore and Edwards have largely been excellent, too, but will face a lot of competition. It will be interesting to see what happens with Giovinco - I think he’s done well enough when fit (six goals in nine games) for his star status to get him on the team as of today, but if he continues to struggle to put a run of games together there are going to be stronger candidates on merit.
Hagglund and Bono will be on the outside looking in but their nomination is evidence enough of the big steps forward they both continue to take.
