Armando Cooper comes off the bench as Panama hold USA in Gold Cup opener

Justin Morrow will have to wait to make his international return.

Armando Cooper made a 20-minute appearance as a substitute as Panama got off to an excellent start at the Gold Cup by drawing 1-1 with the USA.

Cooper replaced Miguel Camargo in midfield just over 10 minutes after the New York City FC player had equalized for the underdogs.

Dom Dwyer had given an unconvincing USA side a first-half lead by converting a low ball into the box supplied by Kelyn Rowe.

There was to be no late cameo for Morrow, though, as Bruce Arena threw on three forwards in search of a winner. Morrow is at a disadvantage in that Jorge Villafana, who started at left-back, is one of few players in the squad who would make the Americans’ starting lineup when they are at full strength.

In Group A, Costa Rica beat Honduras thanks to Marco Urena’s solitary goal immediately after Canada’s win over French Guiana on Friday night. That is a good result for the Canadians - though they may have been hoping Costa Rica would win by a wider margin - as Octavio Zambrano’s side attempt to pip Honduras to second place in the group.

Should Canada qualify for the quarter-finals as one of the two best third-placed teams- which they are in a good position to do having beaten French Guiana - they are likely to face the USA or Mexico. If they grab second place, however, their most probable opponents would be Jamaica, greatly increasing their chances of reaching the last four.

Martinique face Nicaragua in the second Group B game on Saturday.
